Edited by Sir John Hawkins, 2 portrait plates, full page and text engs. 512pp. Advert leaf., 17 hand coloured plates of fish on extra leaves inserted opposite the appropriate species illustrated in the text. 19th century full calf binding, covers panelled and decorated in gilt and blind and the spine tooled in a very unusual manner have the authors name, title and date all tooled on the five wide raised bands. Not labelled but possibly a Gosden binding. Some browning. Inscription on blank leaf "Herbert Howorth Wood. The gilt of Miss F. Jenkins, of Charlotte Town, Prince Edward's Island, July 24th 1909".

Engraved general title page, engarved frontis (Cartouche) and engraved half title, woodcuts of fish. Finely rebound in modern full very dark green morocco, gilt angling emblems in decorated panels of spine, red leather title label, inner gilt dentelles, edge of covers ruled in gilt. All edges of pages gilt. Apart from some very light damp staining on the last few pages, a fine crisp example of a scarce book.



Walton, I. and Cotton, C: The Complete Angler, 1836, Wm.Pickering, London, with Memoirs and Notes by Sir Harris Nicolas, 48 engraved plates on India Paper by twenty-seven of the most prominent artists. A SPLENDID EXTRA- ILLUSTRATED BEING TWO VOLUMES EXTENDED TO TEN. Approximately 1303 extra illustrations. These comprise:- 19 very fine original water colours including eight early water colours of butterflies, insects, etc. on parchment. (numerous images on each sheet) early copper engravings, a number being in the proof state, of fish and fishing scenes including a number of original engravings by Barlow, Hollar, Marshall, White, etc., views, fishing scenes, portraits. Hand coloured engravings of fish, (including some by Bloch). This set is bound by Matthews in full dark green levant morocco, with covers decoratively panelled in gilt, inner gilt dentelles, spines heavily tooled with Walton and Cotton monogram and fishing scenes set into heavily ornate panels. Each volume has a specially printed title page. All edges gilt. Size 28cm x 19cm. This set was from the important library collected by Robert Hoe in the latter half nineteenth century and bears his red leather book plate. Volume One is signed by him and dated 1867. This library was sold in New York in 1911, this Walton item being Lot 3411. This set is also recorded in the Angler's Note-book and Naturalist's Record, Elliot Stock, 1888. (This is included with the set, plus the sale catalogue and hand written index of the illustrations.) This must rate as one of the most important extra-illustrated Waltons and is a very desirable item.

A fine commemorative edition of this title.

Panelled with four gilt lines, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. Very minor foxing. Contained in a fold over Solander box of green buckram by Zaehnsdorf. A most attractive and desirable set. Very scarce.
